Think of some of your pains in life and what products or services would make your life easier or happier. This is actually a good exercise for simply keeping your brain active and sharp.
Their are opportunities all around us if we just keep our minds open. Teachers always tell students don’t be afraid to ask questions because someone else in the class probably doesn’t know either, so use that thought as you brainstorm business ideas ( no idea is stupid! #petrock)
Where this line of thinking must stop is in actually executing the business. Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of assuming that everyone that uses their product thinks the way they do (or should). Common assumptions include:
- I’m cheap so i must have a low priced product
- I would pay alot for this so everyone else will too
- Everyone is as smart as I am so forget easy to use
- I think facebook is stupid, so will my customers
- _____________ (fill in the blank for anything you value that your spouse/sibling/bff/ doesn’t)
After you have your idea create a small scale working version of it and test it on your ideal customer. Here you will find out what the market actually values. Find out what else pains your ideal customer to see how you can add value to your offering.
Repeat this research for the life of your business with current and prospective customers and you will have a long business life.
PLEASE DON’T ASSUME THAT YOUR CUSTOMERS THINK JUST LIKE YOU!
